Sing Out: Outcasts
Sing Out: Outcasts explores the complex characters who diverge from the ordinary, from misunderstood monsters to unconventional heroes and anti-heroes to villains. Featuring songs from a mix of classic and contemporary musicals with an edge, it shines a spotlight on those who exist in the shadows, yet command the stage with their bold stories. Through both light and dark themes, the show honors the resilience and depth of those who don’t fit the mold.
Sing Out: Outcasts will have two casts with approximately 30 people per cast!

What is a Sing Out?
A Sing Out is a a stripped down, intimate cabaret style production, where the focus is on singing! You will spend a vast majority of the time with the director and music director on vocal technique, acting choices, and the meaning behind the songs. There will also be some minimal movement that meets the comfort level of the participants who sign up.
All songs will be performed in groups of two or more with multiple opportunities for each participant to be featured as vocalists – there are no completely solo songs here! Participants may also have input into the overall song selection, and/or the songs they are most interested in being featured in.
In Sing Out: Outcasts there will be some songs where parts will be divided “as written” by character and other songs where a single character is divided into multiple features. Each song that’s been selected tells a story within itself and will act as its own vignette.

A note from the director…
This show has opportunities for participants to sing their faces off – and will focus on character work and acting – but there will also be a little movement/dancing. We’ll have fun exploring the bold characters, tight harmonies, and bringing to life each moment. Most of the songs are from shows that are ridiculous and over the top – they’re meant to be played boldly with reckless abandon and fun. At the same time, the overarching theme has a lot of heart since the show explores what it feels like to be an outcast while finding a place where you belong.
From Misunderstood Monster/Outcasts to Villains to Antiheros to Unconventional Heros the theme and set list takes us on a journey.
We start by exploring the misunderstood monsters and outcasts who just don’t fit the socially accepted mold. These characters find solace and joy in the community that embraces them – even if it means isolating from others. (When You’re an Addams, I Got Life, Two-Player Game)
Then we meet those struggling to find their place in the world while dealing with difficult circumstances and trying to walk the line between what’s right and what’s wrong. (Dead Mom, Disappear, Killer Instinct)
After that, we look at what it takes to turn dark/go bad – whether outcast or not – there is a line that once crossed creates a villain. (Cell Block Tango, Hold Me, Bat Boy, World Burn)
Then we explore intriguing antiheros – characters who may not share the same morals and ideals as traditional heroes and where that can lead. (I’m Alive, No Good Deed, Seventeen)
Finally, we close with the unconventional heros who boldly fight for acceptance and the right to live proudly and freely as they are in the world. (Die Vampire, Die!, I Am What I Am, Keep Marching)
All of this is set to music from edgy, powerful, and fun musicals, with a set list that is a lot of fun to listen to again and again!
Basic tuition to participate in an AWT Sing Out is $470.
If the $470 tuition is not within your budget, please consider one of our Pay What You Can options ($445 and $420 for this program). Additionally, if you would like to spread your payments out, you can choose from a variety of options. Our ability to offer this program with affordable options is contingent on those with the ability to pay full tuition choosing that option. If we do not have enough full priced tuition participants, this may result in cancelling the program.
Discount types can not be combined. Tuition does NOT cover a print out of your script/score/sheet music or your costume. AWT has a small budget to cover some specific costume needs. From there, we work with participants to piece together costumes sourced from their closets, thrift stores and the good will of the community. All tuition payments are final and non-refundable for any reason.
Below is the rehearsal and performance schedule for Winter ’25 Sing Out. Click on the dot or details below each date for more information!
Rehearsals will be held primarily on Monday AND Wednesday nights. Both casts will be called together for most rehearsals. During the second week of rehearsals, you will receive a detailed schedule that specifies exactly what dates and times you will be needed.
Tech, Dress rehearsals, and Performances will take place between March 8 and March 16 at the Theater at the 14th St Y.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Prior to Launch Day, participants will have the opportunity to list rehearsal conflicts. We have a flexible attendance policy, but we do feel that if participants have to miss significantly more than 3 rehearsals it may be harder to catch up and may impact participant experience. Please keep this guideline in mind when deciding to register for this program! If participants do miss significantly more than 3 rehearsals, it will be up to the creative team to decide if that impacts their role assignment or which numbers they can safely perform on stage.
If you do have absences, resources will be made available so you can catch up on anything you miss outside of rehearsal time. Once rehearsals begin, it is up to the discretion of the creative team whether or not a participant’s role must be reassigned due to missed rehearsals.

We would like to minimize participant absences during tech and show week. When filling out the interest list, you will be asked to confirm if you are available for the whole tech/show time for at least one cast for any shows you are interested in. If interest in a program is greater than the number of spots available, participants who are able to attend tech/dress/shows entirely for one cast may be prioritized during the registration process than those with absences.
For more information, please check out our blog post “How Many Absences are Too Many?”
COVID safety protocols: Masks are always welcome! Depending on the number of people in the room and/or the size of the room, there may be some rehearsals where masks are required.
Performance policy: Dress rehearsals and performances will all be mask optional. We will no longer be requiring proof of a negative test to perform unmasked, but it is imperative that any performers who are feeling any symptoms stay home.
Audience members may still be asked to be masked during the performance.
If a venue we are using for rehearsals or performances has a stricter policy, we will defer to them. Our policy on safety protocols may shift over time as the situation changes.
