What is a Musical Theater Showcase?

Our Musical Theater Showcase is a performance program in which actors will take on their favorite roles from the musical theater canon in scenes of 2-3. This is a perfect space to explore your dream roles and favorite shows without the pressure of a full musical rehearsal process. There are no cast twins! Participants can select to register into the Tuesday night or Thursday night rehearsal schedule, and both groups will be combined for the two performances in March. This program is recommended for individuals who have some performance experience and are ready for a technique deep dive.

Sing Out vs Musical Theater Showcase

SING OUT

Out of show context

Focused primarily on singing (with limited acting coaching/storytelling)

In multiple numbers with various small and medium sized featured opportunities

For all levels of performers – brand new, karaoke divas, or seasoned pros

Features assigned by creative team

Cast model – more flexible rehearsal process, cast twins, etc.

Two to three performances

For the singing lover!

MUSICAL THEATER SHOWCASE

In show context (comparable to a scene study)

Focused on storytelling and musical theater performance technique

Primarily in one scene/song (deep dive), plus one to two group numbers

Best for folks ready for a technique deep dive – recommended for folks who have performance experience in some capacity. (More of an “intermediate” or “advanced” class rather than “beginner or open level”)

Option to sign up with friend/collaborator and request specific song – think “dream role” opportunity!

Cohort model – stricter attendance expectations, NO cast twins/understudies

Two performances

For the musical theater nerd!

Basic tuition to participate in an AWT Musical Theater Showcase is $450.

If the $450 tuition is not within your budget, please consider one of our Pay What You Can options ($425 and $400 for this program). Additionally, if you would like to spread your payments out, you can choose from a variety of payment options. Our ability to offer this program with affordable options is contingent on those with the ability to pay full tuition choosing that option. If we do not have enough full priced tuition participants, this may result in cancelling the program.

Discount types can not be combined. Tuition does NOT cover a print out of your script/score/sheet music or your costume. AWT has a small budget to cover some specific costume needs. From there, we work with participants to piece together costumes sourced from their closets, thrift stores and the good will of the community.  All tuition payments are final and non-refundable for any reason.

Why does AWT charge tuition? Where does that money go? (Read our “What’s in a Budget?” blog post to find out!)

Below is the rehearsal and performance schedule for Musical Theater Showcase! Click on the dot or details below each date for more information! The program launches in January and concludes in March.

Rehearsals will be held between January 19 and February 25, followed by tech and performances March 2 through March 5.  Please see the calendar below for specific dates and times. One group will rehearse on Tuesdays, and the other on Thursdays, culminating in two combined performances. During an early rehearsal, you will receive a detailed schedule that specifies exactly what dates and times you will be needed.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Prior to Launch Day, participants will have the opportunity to list rehearsal conflicts. We typically have a flexible attendance policy, but this program has stricter attendance expectations. We don’t recommend signing up for this program if you will miss more than one or two rehearsals or have to miss any part of tech/performances.

If you do have absences, some resources will be made available so you can catch up on anything you miss outside of rehearsal time. Once rehearsals begin, it is up to the discretion of the creative team whether or not a participant’s role must be reassigned due to missed rehearsals.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Prior to Launch Day, participants will have the opportunity to list rehearsal conflicts. We have a flexible attendance policy, but we do feel that if participants have to miss significantly more than 1-2 rehearsals it may be harder to catch up and may impact participant experience. Please keep this guideline in mind when deciding to register for this program! If participants do miss significantly more than 1-2 rehearsals, it will be up to the creative team to decide if that impacts their role assignment or which numbers they can safely perform on stage.

If you do have absences, resources will be made available so you can catch up on anything you miss outside of rehearsal time. Once rehearsals begin, it is up to the discretion of the creative team whether or not a participant’s role must be reassigned due to missed rehearsals.

We would like to minimize participant absences during tech and show weeks.  Please pay particular attention to those dates on the calendar!

For more information, please check out our blog post “How Many Absences are Too Many?”

COVID safety protocols: Masks are always welcome! Depending on the number of people in the room and/or the size of the room, there may be some rehearsals where masks are required.

Performance policy: Dress rehearsals and performances will all be mask optional. We will no longer be requiring proof of a negative test to perform unmasked, but it is imperative that any performers who are feeling any symptoms stay home.

Audience members may still be asked to be masked during the performance.

If a venue we are using for rehearsals or performances has a stricter policy, we will defer to them. Our policy on safety protocols may shift over time as the situation changes.

Our Casting Policy

The way we approach casting at AWT is very different from what is common in traditional theater. We take any notion of specific “types” and basically throw them out the window, so that any individual, regardless of how they identify or are perceived in the world, can see themselves playing any part. Additionally, it’s important to us that we not cast any one person in lead or principal roles too frequently or consecutively, or favor returning participants over people we don’t know as well.

On launch day, it’s more important that you have fun, make friends, and show your personality to the creative team, than it is to show how high you can belt. Regardless of how you are cast this will be an extremely enriching and rewarding experience. If you have your heart set on a specific part or are seeking stardom, we encourage you to consider different goals for this program. Otherwise, this might not be the theatre company for you – and that’s ok!

For even more details on our casting policy, check out our “Casting Demystified” blog post!

Inclusivity

Inclusivity/Access Needs

At AWT, we value inclusion and access. Our programs are open to adults of all skill levels, identities, and Dis/abilities.

If you may need accommodations or additional support throughout the season, or if you are registering on behalf of someone who may need additional support, please reach out to us at info [at] afterworktheater.org so we can speak with you about how to best provide that support. We’ll schedule a video call with you and/or the person participating so that we can learn more about your access needs, and we can share what to expect from the program. If after this discussion, we mutually find this program isn’t a match, we will process a withdrawal with a full refund. This video call is a requirement for any participant who may need extra support throughout the season.

Registration

Registration for Musical Theater Showcase is currently sold out. To join the waitlist for any available spots that open between now and Launch Day, please fill out the form below!

If you are someone who may need some additional support throughout the season, or if you are registering on behalf of someone who may need additional support, please reach out to us at info [at] afterworktheater.org after registering, so that we can speak with you about how to best provide that support! We’ll schedule a video call with you and/or the person participating, so that we can learn more about any accommodations needed, and we can describe what to expect from participating in the program. We can then make an assessment to determine if this is a good fit. If it’s decided this is not a match made in heaven, we will process a withdrawal with a full refund. This video call is a requirement for any participant who feels they need extra support throughout the season.

Registration is not transferrable unless you are registering on behalf of another individual and you let us know that information within two days of registering into a program (please email us at info [at] afterworktheater.org).

For more information on our registration lottery process, please check out our blog posts “How Does Registration Work Anyway?” and “Registration FAQs.” Make sure you’ve added afterworktheater.org to your safe sender list and that you are checking your email at least once a day so you don’t miss out on a spot!
